Trench Coat vs Overcoat: Which Do You Need in the UK?
Updated October 2026. Written by The Platinum Tailor, a family tailoring business making wool overcoats since 2012.
Quick answer
A trench coat is a water resistant cotton coat made to keep you dry. A wool overcoat is made to keep you warm. In the UK, a trench is the better coat for autumn and spring, roughly September to November and March to May, when it is mild and wet. An overcoat is the better coat for winter, December to February, when it is cold. If you can only buy one and you feel the cold, buy the overcoat and carry an umbrella. If you live somewhere mild and rainy, the trench will get more wear.
The key differences
| Trench coat | Wool overcoat | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Water resistant cotton or cotton blend | Wool or wool blend |
| Main job | Keeping rain and wind off | Keeping you warm |
| Warmth | Light. Needs layers in cold weather | High, especially fully lined |
| Rain | Good in showers and steady rain | Fine in drizzle, not in a downpour |
| Best months (UK) | September to November, March to May | November to March |
| Details | Belt, epaulettes, storm flap, D-rings | Cleaner front, fewer details |
| Formality | Smart casual to smart | Smart to formal |
Where the trench coat comes from
The trench coat was developed for British army officers in the First World War, which is where the name comes from. It needed to be lighter than the heavy wool greatcoats soldiers had worn before, and to keep rain out in the trenches. Nearly every detail had a job: epaulettes for rank, a storm flap at the shoulder to stop rain running inside, D-rings on the belt for kit, and a belt to cinch it tight against the wind. Those details stayed long after the war because they define the shape.
The wool overcoat is older. It grew out of the heavy civilian and military coats of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and its job has always been warmth. See what is a greatcoat for that side of the story.
Can you wear a trench coat in winter?
You can, with layers. A thick jumper or a quilted gilet under a trench gets you through a mild winter day. But cotton does not insulate the way wool does, and on a cold, windy platform in January you will feel the difference. If you mostly travel by car or spend little time outdoors, a layered trench may be enough. If you walk, commute by train or wait at bus stops, a wool overcoat is much warmer. Our guide to whether wool overcoats are warm covers what to wear underneath at each temperature.
Can you wear a wool overcoat in the rain?
In light rain, yes. Wool naturally sheds a little water and keeps insulating when damp. In heavy rain it will soak through eventually, and a wet wool coat is heavy and slow to dry. Carry an umbrella, and hang the coat on a broad wooden hanger to dry away from radiators when you get in.
Do you need both?
If you live in the UK and wear smart clothes most days, owning both makes sense. Between them they cover the whole year: the trench for the wet, mild months and the overcoat for the cold ones. If you are buying one now, in October, think about which months you need it for. A trench will see you to about the end of November. An overcoat will see you to March.
How to wear a trench coat
- Belted and buttoned over a suit for the classic city look.
- Belted but open, with the belt tied loosely at the back, over knitwear and trousers.
- Unbelted and open over a t-shirt or shirt and jeans on a mild day.
- Collar up in wind and rain. That is what the storm flap and throat latch are for.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a trench coat and an overcoat?
A trench coat is made from water resistant cotton and is designed to keep you dry. An overcoat is made from wool and is designed to keep you warm. Trenches also have military details like a belt, epaulettes and a storm flap.
Is a trench coat warm enough for winter?
Only with layers, and only in milder winters. Cotton does not insulate like wool. For cold UK winter days, especially if you walk or commute, a wool overcoat is much warmer.
Is a trench coat waterproof?
Most are water resistant rather than fully waterproof. They handle showers and steady rain well, but will eventually soak through in a long downpour.
Can you wear a trench coat over a suit?
Yes. A knee length trench over a suit is a classic city look and covers the jacket properly.
Should I buy a trench coat or an overcoat first?
If you feel the cold or spend time outdoors in winter, buy the overcoat first. If you live somewhere mild and rainy, or need a coat for autumn and spring, buy the trench first.
