About The Platinum Tailor

The Platinum Tailor is a London family business. It has been making wool and cashmere overcoats for 13 years, and it is still run by the same family today.

Where it started

The idea was straightforward, even if the execution took years to get right. A well-made wool overcoat, the kind that lasts a decade, holds its shape, and looks better with age, had become the preserve of people willing to spend £500 or more. Everyone else was left choosing between fast fashion and compromise.

That seemed like a gap worth filling. Not by cutting corners on the cloth or the construction, but by cutting out everything in between, the retail markups, the middlemen, the Bond Street overheads, and passing the saving directly to the customer.

Thirteen years later, that is still exactly what we do.

What we make

Overcoats. Only overcoats. Not suits, not shirts, not accessories. Just one category of garment, made as well as we possibly can, in wool and cashmere cloths that would cost considerably more if you bought them anywhere else.

The focus is narrow by design. Thirteen years of making one thing, and only one thing, produces a level of refinement that a brand trying to do everything cannot match at the same price. We know this cloth. We know these patterns. We know what works and what doesn't, because we have been doing nothing else long enough to find out.

That is a customer review, quoted verbatim. It comes up repeatedly, unprompted, across different platforms and it is the most accurate single sentence we have found to describe what we are trying to do.

The designs

British overcoat design has a long tradition, the covert coat, the Crombie, the double-breasted city coat, that spent several decades being quietly forgotten in favour of lighter, cheaper, more disposable outerwear. We thought that was a shame.

Our coats are rooted in those classic silhouettes. Clean lines, proper lapels, lengths that actually keep you warm. Where we update them, we do so carefully, a modern fit here, a refined detail there, without losing what made the originals worth reviving in the first place.

The result is a coat that does not look like it was made last season, because in a sense it wasn't. It looks like something that has always existed and always will.

A family business, still

The Platinum Tailor is run by a small family team in London. There is no investor, no venture capital, no outside pressure to grow faster than the quality allows. Every coat that goes out is made with that in mind.
