The Complete Women's Overcoat Fit & Styling Guide

Updated October 2026. Written by The Platinum Tailor, a family tailoring business making wool overcoats since 2012.

Quick answer

A women's wool overcoat should fit cleanly at the shoulder, with the seam sitting at the edge of your shoulder, and have enough room across the chest to button over a jumper without pulling. Sleeves should reach the base of your thumb. Knee length is the most versatile, below the knee is warmest and most dramatic. Black, navy and camel cover almost every occasion. Our women's coats are true to UK dress size, 10 to 18.

A women's wool overcoat does most of the styling work for you. Get the cut and colour right and almost anything underneath looks better. It is worn every day from October to March and does more to define how put together you look than any other single piece.

Getting the fit right

Check Right Wrong
Shoulder Seam at the natural edge of the shoulder Falling down the arm or creeping up the neck
Chest Buttons close over a jumper, no pulling Fabric strains around the buttons
Sleeves Base of the thumb with arms relaxed Knit cuffs poking out, or covering the hand
Back Hangs straight from the shoulders Pulls across the shoulder blades

The shoulder is the one thing a tailor cannot easily fix, so check it first. Everything else can be taken in, belted or styled around.

Length: where to land

  • Knee length: the most versatile. Works over trousers, dresses, jeans and midi skirts. If you buy one coat, this is the length.
  • Just below the knee: a touch more formal and elongating. Lovely over tailored trousers and structured dresses.
  • Mid calf and longer: the statement length, and the strongest shape this winter. Great over slim trousers, knee high boots or long dresses.
  • Avoid: hems that end at the widest part of the hip, which cut the silhouette at the worst point.

Our Covert and Long Overcoat are 44 inches from collar to hem, which falls around or below the knee on most women. The Double Breasted Overcoat is 49 inches for a longer, flowing line.

Colour: the three that do everything

  • Black: the most formal, versatile and timeless. Lets everything else lead.
  • Navy: softer than black and easier with brown leather and warm tones.
  • Camel: the most distinctive. Lifts an outfit and works with navy, grey, cream, brown and black.

Charcoal and oatmeal are sensible alternatives. Brighter colours like red and burgundy are on trend this winter but date faster. As a first coat, stick with the core three. More on this season's styles in the best women's winter coats for 2026/27.

What to wear underneath

  • Work: tailored trousers, a fine knit or shirt, heeled boots or smart loafers.
  • Everyday: jeans, a cream or grey jumper and leather boots. The most useful outfit a wool coat gives you.
  • Evening: a dress and heels. Knee length coats over knee length dresses, longer coats over longer dresses. Do not pair a maxi dress with a short coat.

Warm colours like camel lift an outfit. Cool colours like black and navy anchor it.

Over a blazer: the coat's shoulder seam should sit just beyond the blazer's own seam. Our women's coats are cut 4 inches bigger than your body chest, which takes a soft or lightly structured blazer in your usual size. If your blazer has padded shoulders, size up one or choose the relaxed Double Breasted Overcoat.

Small things that matter

  • Fasten at least one button when walking. An open coat looks untidy in motion. Belted coats look best tied.
  • Smooth the lapels so they sit flat when you put the coat on.
  • Choose a quiet scarf in a complementary tone.
  • Match the bag. A structured leather bag suits a tailored coat better than a scruffy tote.

Getting the size right online

Our women's coats are true to UK dress size. To check, measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, over a light top rather than a thick jumper, and match it to the body chest row in our size guide. The coats already include room for a jumper underneath. If you are between sizes, or like to layer something chunky, size up.

For length, compare the coat's collar to hem measurement with a coat you already own and like.

Frequently asked questions

How should a women's overcoat fit?

The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, the coat should button over a jumper without pulling, and the sleeves should reach the base of your thumb.

Should I size up in a wool coat?

Not usually with our coats, which already allow for a jumper. Order your normal UK dress size and size up only if you are between sizes or layer very chunky knits.

What is the most flattering coat length?

Knee length suits the most people and works with the most outfits. Below the knee is more elongating and dramatic. Avoid hems that end at the widest part of the hip.

What colour wool coat is most versatile for women?

Black is the most versatile. Navy and camel are close behind and slightly softer.

Can a wool coat be taken in?

Yes. A tailor can take in the waist and shorten sleeves or hem fairly easily. Shoulders are much harder to alter, so get those right first.

Which women's coats work over a blazer without pulling across the shoulders?

Coats with a natural shoulder and a relaxed cut through the back. Try the coat on over the blazer and reach forward. If it pulls across the shoulder blades or the blazer sleeve bunches inside, it is too small. Our women's coats allow 4 inches over your body chest, enough for a soft blazer in your normal UK size. For a structured blazer, size up or choose our Double Breasted Overcoat.

What should I know before buying a women's black overcoat in the UK?

Check four things: wool is the main fibre, the coat is fully lined, the length suits what you wear most (knee length is safest), and the shop has a clear UK returns policy. Black is the most versatile colour but shows lint, so keep a clothes brush handy. Our Women's Black Covert Overcoat is Β£140 in UK 10 to 18, with free tracked UK delivery and 30 day returns.

Women's wool and cashmere overcoats from Β£140. UK 10 to 18. Free tracked UK delivery.
